The BRSU Goes to Montpelier
The Vermont Speaker of the House recognized State Representative Kathleen James of Manchester. Addressing her colleagues, James directed their attention to the visitor gallery overlooking the Chamber, “I’m proud to introduce to you, the students from the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union (BRSU).”
The legislature was celebrating public schools and a few districts were invited to come to the Statehouse and share a project or initiative with State Senators and Representatives. The BRSU quickly responded to the request to attend, eager to share their engaging and fun experience with reading The Wild Robot, during their One District, One Book experience in March. Early on the morning of April 10th, five students representing almost every BRSU school boarded a bus for a whirlwind day-trip to Montpelier.
“What a thrill for these scholars and an honor for everyone at the BRSU,” said BRSU Superintendent Randi Lowe, who accompanied the students on the adventure. “Our teachers, staff, families and students all came together as a community of readers. It’s a wonderful demonstration of what public schools can do.”
Before the legislative session, the five BRSU students and their fearless teacher leaders, Jessica Kuzmich and Jessica Waller set up a presentation booth in a room in the Capitol. It was a colorful display of various events and activities connected to the One District, One Book reading of The Wild Robot. During their exhibition, the students met with state legislators and public officials, proudly showing their work and responding to questions.
“It was just the best day at the Statehouse,” said BRSU English Language and Arts Chair Jessica Kuzmich. “Our kids were mesmerized by the pageantry of the legislature and they were so proud of what they had accomplished. It’s a day all of us will never forget.”
