Mettawee celebrates pedestrian safety

A new tradition is underway at the Mettawee Community School -- the annual "Walk to School Day." For the second consecutive year, students and staff donned coats, hats, and scarfs for a brisk walk together on a crisp February morning.

“The point is to promote life-long healthy habits to children and teach them pedestrian security,” said Mettawee Principal Brooke DeBonis about the event that took place on Wednesday, February 7th. “Wear bright clothing, walk on sidewalks when available, learn driveway and parking lot safety, and always be sure to stop, look and listen when near the streets.”

Despite the cold weather, the kids and staff enjoyed their morning stroll. “It was fun,” said a student. “It was so nice to walk with the whole school, get fresh air and chat with friends."

It was also pretty cool that when everyone came inside, they were greeted by cups of hot chocolate.
