The Manchester Elementary Middle School (MEMS) traditionally observes a Spirit Week twice during the academic year. “It’s an opportunity to add an extra dimension of fun into our calendar and celebrate our school,” says MEMS librarian Erin McCall.
This year MEMS positioned its second Spirit Week in March to align with the recognition of National Reading Month and the all-school read of “The Wild Robot.” Each day of Spirit Week, March 18-22, everyone at MEMS celebrated a special benefit of reading.
Monday: Students dressed up in multiple colors to show how books “Expand and Brighten our World.”
Tuesday: To demonstrate how books “Take us Places,” students wore clothing inspired by a real or imaginary place.
Wednesday: Students labeled their favorite book on a badge for a “Lanyard Swap” to be traded with friends throughout the day.
“Thur-Roz-day”: In recognition of “Roz the Robot” from “The Wild Robot,” everyone was encouraged to wear something gray and make a control panel to share what you are “designed” for.
Friday: “Book Character Parade” — Dress up as your favorite character from a favorite book.
As the month of March draws to a close, spirits are riding high at MEMS.
