The sixth graders at Sunderland Elementary School possess a quirky sense of humor. It was their “foolish” idea to designate April first as Funky Hat Day at school.
Sunderland takes great pride in its reputation as a PBIS School: Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. PBIS creates a school-wide systems approach to introduce and establish a culture to create a safe and effective learning environment for everyone.
At the end of the first trimester, Sunderland elected to align the PBIS program with regularly scheduled Spirit Days, celebrated on the first day of each month. The sixth graders were tasked with developing the themes for each celebration.
So what’s next up after this week’s Funky Hat day? Why it’s Wacky Wednesday on May first, that’s what. On that day, the students will get creative with hair color and styles, as well as eye-catching patterns on their clothes.
Now that -- is a Funky Hat!
